It Only Looks Hopeless…
Mark 5:35-36 (ESV) — 35 While he was still speaking, there came from the ruler’s house some who said, “Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the Teacher any further?” 36 But overhearing what they said, Jesus said to the ruler of the synagogue, “Do not fear, only believe.”
Have you ever felt like your circumstances were beyond hope; will Covid-19 ever end? As I write this, we are seeing a resurgence of Covid-19 and hearing talk of potential shutdowns–AGAIN. Perhaps you have come to the place where you have said, “What’s the point? I am not sure God would help me after what I have done.” Have you felt like your faith was feeble? Are you just tired? Hopelessness is debilitating; although Jesus is unfazed by your circumstances He is not unfeeling.
Stuck in the middle of incredible miracles found in Mark chapter 5 is this statement of hopelessness: “why trouble the teacher any further?” Jesus had just cast out close to 7000 demons from ONE man followed by a ceremonially unclean woman who had the audacity to press through the crowd and touch His coat in hope of finally being healed of her 12-year disease. Yet, on his way to heal a little girl, word comes of her death and hopelessness sinks its shark-like teeth into their hearts. In verse 35 the ultimate “why bother” is uttered; “Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the Teacher any further?” After all, death is the end. Isn’t it?
When our hope in conventional wisdom and common solutions dies, Jesus enters the pain and gives hope with a simple promise: “Do not fear, only believe.” Can hope really be that simple? It all depends on who is telling you not to fear. When the creator and sustainer of the universe is engaged by your feeble prayer, hope is on the horizon! You might not see it yet, but His glory will rise and shine on your desperation. The same Jesus who was unfazed by 7000 demons, healed a 12 year long disease, and raised a dead child is certainly able to meet you with his great words of comfort, “Do not fear, only believe.”
Do you need hope today? Do you have a problem that has lasted for years? Has a relationship died? Has hope died in your heart?
Press through the crowd to Jesus because the creator and sustainer of the universe says to you, “Do not fear, only believe.” Take Hope!
