Dimmer Switch
14 “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.
Matthew 5:14-16
“Alexa, turn the lights to 50%.” We have all used a dimmer switch or perhaps a smart light bulb to turn the intensity of a light bulb up and down to suit our needs. On Sunday we looked at the glory of God revealed by the “raging ball of fire” we call our Sun; it never dims but sometimes the glory of its brilliance is hidden from us. The Sun is constantly declaring the glory of God in creation. Moment by moment our little Sun (100x the size of Earth) joins in the chorus of countless billion-trillions of other stars in the known universe to constantly reveal the majesty of God.
Let’s look at the glory of your light shining in this world!
When Jesus said you are the light of the world he was saying something infinitely and eternally grand. You were created in the image of God and, if you have been born again in Jesus, you were recreated with unimaginable potential to outshine the Sun and stars now and for eternity!
Although the sun’s light reveals spectacular wonders in our world, the life of a Follower of Christ reveals the unmatched glory of the gospel to change lives, provide hope, and give eternally meaningful life; a life redeemed by the grace of God through the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus shines more glorious than all the glory of the stars combined. Your salvation in Christ is so spectacular that all the angels in Heaven rejoiced at your salvation and long to catch a glimpse into what you have in Christ. (Luke 15:10, 1 Peter 1:12). Your salvation is more glorious than the creation of the universe.
Do not put a dimmer on the light of your life in Christ. Don’t hide your light under a bushel of unbelief. Don’t dim your life with anxiety. Don’t allow the cares of this world to choke your faith and give root to fear. During this season in our world, look for ways to shine the glory of God through your loving good works to others suffering with no hope.
You are the light of the world and there are many around you that are walking in darkness. Go Shine!
